It's been a while since I've taken a class, but when Studio Calico announced a class about grids, I was sold. It started this week and the first lesson is all about basic grids. I am hoping to learn how to strengthen my designs and ironically, how to make my layouts not always so structured and square. We'll see how that goes as the class progresses, but first is a layout inspired by one of the contributors, Lisa Spangler.
I'd recently shared a collage of all 365 photos from my daily photo challenge from 2014 knowing that I would be making a layout using it. Creating a basic grid with patterned paper for my background seemed to me the perfect complement for all of those pictures. To provide ample separation, I matted my collage on a piece of gray patterned paper, leaving a wide border.
I used a few of the printables from the class along with die cut tabs, sequin, mist, and one of my Black & White Geometric mini flair. It's a little hard to see, but some of the squares are popped up on thin foam tape and then the collage is on thicker foam dots.
I'm hoping to at least be able to create one project each week as the lessons are released. Even though I'll have the material forever, it's much more fun to participate while the class is current. Are you a fan of grids or do squares stifle your creativity?
